About SIFF

Founded in 1993, Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) is the only competitive film festival in China approved by International Federation of Film Producers Associations.

Relying on the rapid development of the Chinese film industry and the trend of globalization in the film industry, SIFF focuses on awards, markets, forums and film exhibitions so as to build an international platform, and promote the development of the Chinese film industry, and the exchange and cooperation between Chinese and foreign film industries.

In recent years, with the increasing growth of China’s economic strength and the rise of its international status, Chinese films have attracted more and more attention from people around the world, and SIFF, held in June annually, has become a great event for filmmakers worldwide, whose universal industry appeal, international influence, and effect on the world’s multicultural film culture and development of the film industry have also been praised by people inside and outside the industry. In 2014, 447 mainstream media around the world and 1,385 journalists reported on SIFF. People’s Daily, Xinhua News Agency, CCTV, Shanghai Media Group, Sina, Tencent, Sohu, Netease and other mainstream media paid much attention to it. “The Wall Street Journal,” “The New York Times,” “The Los Angeles Times,” “The Mirror,” “The Daily Mail,” Reuters, Associated Press, EFE and other international mainstream media as well as “The Hollywood Reporter,” “Variety,” “Screen International,” “Film Business Asia” and other famous professional film magazines gave a lot of reports on SIFF so that SIFF won much public praise.

The 18th SIFF will be held on June 13, 2015 to 21.


The awards of SIFF include Golden Goblet Award for selecting international films and Asian New Talent Award. Celebrities in the international film industry were invited to form the jury to select films entries. The Jury Presidents are as follows: Gong Li, Tom Hooper, Luc Besson, Wong Kar-wai, Danny Boyle, Barry Levinson, Oliver Stone and so on.

The main competition, Golden Goblet Award for selecting international films, reflects that SIFF is a professional, authoritative and influential film festival. Best Documentary and Best Animation were newly introduced this year. Asian New Talent Award aims at discovering and introducing new Asian young people in the film industry, and facilitating creation in Asian films. This year, the appraise system will be upgraded fully from selection to nomination.

In 2014, SIFF attracted 1,099 film entries for the competitions and 1,808 entries for the exhibitions. Among 15 nominees, 7 films for Golden Goblet Award are global premieres, and there are works from Schlondorff, Masayuki Suo and other master directors.

Film Mart

Film Mart of SIFF is the most professional film trading platform in China, which has attracted important film production, distribution firms at home and abroad, and hundreds of international buyers to trade each year. Excellent exhibitors at home and abroad cover television investment and financing, production, post-production, special effects, visual effects, distribution, marketing, law works, games and other fields, showing a diversified market pattern.

The international film and television marts first merged in 2014 covered an exhibition area of over 22,000 square meters. All booths were sold out, over 400 heavyweight exhibitors at home and abroad were attracted and 2,867 buyers visited the mart and traded. SIFF Project merged and upgraded again received application forms for 253 projects, among which 28 projects were selected and 8 projects belonged to New Talents Project, and attracted 732 buyers to hold 455 one-to-one negotiation meetings. Cooperation intentions are reached in all the projects.

Film Forum

Adhering to the aim of “Chinese Road and World Value,” Film Forum of SIFF which provides professional services for the film industry is the most characteristic and influential industrial exchange platform in the international film festival.

In 2014, with a continuation of the industrial vane function, Film Forum of SIFF focused on cultivating new stars and creating its own works and even extended its business to financial innovation, new media integration and other aspects. Liu Chunning, General Manager of Alibaba Digital Entertainment Group, Robert Stoll, General Manager of the London Office of Film Finance, the largest completion guarantee company in America, Stephen Schaff, a partner in the O’Melveny & Myers LLP, Wei Jianhua, Foundation Chairman and other non-traditional filmmakers all took part in discussions of the Forum and sought the future development direction of Chinese films at a different angle.

Film Panorama

Film Panorama of SIFF creates unique multiple viewing platforms with “Tribute to Masters,” “SIFF Highlights,” “Gala Screening,” “Week of Jackie Chan’s Action Films,” “Focus China,” “Revisit Classics,” “Multi-perspective,” “4K Restored Classic Film Panorama,” “Global Village” and others this year. With films of different styles, Film Panorama of SIFF provides an exhibition and exchange platform for global filmmakers and a window for the public and media to understand the world film trends.

During the 9-day 2014 SIFF, 385 films at home and abroad were shown for 1,017 times in 43 screens of 35 cinemas. Over 300,000 people came to see those films. A total of 115 various special film exhibitions and press conferences of main filmmakers were held, arousing a warm interaction with the audience.

Special Projects

With the rapid development of the market, the industry pattern of Chinese film is also changing and Internet companies try to enter the film industry successively. SIFF which first entered the new media field in the competitive film festival will also cooperate fully with the Internet companies to launch the first “Internet Film Carnival” and create the cultivation platform of new Internet film and TV stars and high-quality IP, the focus platform of Internet film industrial exploration and thinking and the promotion platform of fans interaction and experiences of Internet films in 2015.

In addition, SIFF will also launch the first “Jackie Chan Action Movie Week ” ,Co-sponsored by Jackie Chan, a famous international action film star and SIFF, this activity aims at commending filmmakers who have made outstanding contributions to films and focuses on cultivating the new force of Chinese action film in order to better carry forward Chinese action films. Besides the Forum and Panorama, 8 awards voted by the audience will be established and the award of “Iron Man” will be presented.
